CHAPTER 98

Welcome to Excelsior #98 Chapter website.  I’m Dawn Aikman the Chapter president.  It doesn’t seem possible this will be the start of my second year as president.  Last year we accomplished many outstanding projects.  Across the Chapter footprint we delivered 4783 dictionaries to children in many schools.  The Buffalo/Niagara Club donated 46,330 Books for Kids.  Iroquois Club/Council had their 26th Children's Winterfest Christmas party for 300 under privileged children at the New York State Fairgrounds.  Leatherstocking Club/Council with Iroquois Club/Council did 3000 911 demonstrations for kids at the Farm and Safety Camps in upstate New York.

We also won two $5000.00 grants from Verizon Foundation through the Telecom Pioneers Region.  One for a children’s after school program at the Corning Salvation Army call Kid’s Café.  Two computers, Scholastic books, Leap Frog hardware and software were supplied to the program.  We installed Project Connect and introduced Think Infinity to the instructors.

The second grant went to help Lion’s Camp Badger become ADA compliant.  We upgraded and organized the library with Braille and Scholastic books.  Installed four oak bookshelves and organized their existing inventory of books.  We build a handicap ramp and installed a larger door which made the library ADA compliant.  For the playground we purchased and installed a wheelchair swing and stained the jungle gym installed a new tire swing and new swing seats then spread 6 inches of cushioned material beneath every item on the playground.  All this happened on one weekend in June which was the hottest on record.  Many other items at the camp where completed that weekend with the help of our generous volunteers.

There are so many other things we have accomplished with hours of volunteering I could go on and on.  But what I would like to offer you is an opportunity to come and volunteer with us to help our communities grow in education, literacy and helping spread awareness on domestic violence.  Those are the Verizon Telecom Pioneers highlighted projects.  We just add a few more along the way.

Hope to see you at our next project.  Please check this site for upcoming projects or ask a pioneer for more information.

Yours in Pioneering

Dawn Aikman
